How to Make a Perfect Bed

Beds are of Many Types. But do you know How to make them Comfortable & Perfect for sleeping? There are Beds, then come the Mattress, then Mattress Protectors, Flat Sheets, Bedspreads- But First things First!

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

Let us start with Beds. Wooden Beds & Metal Beds:
Wooden Beds:
1. Four Poster Bed
2. Wooden Bed with a High Headboard & High Footboard (or Footboard higher than the mattress height) also known as 'Sleigh Bed' in the Classic Form.
3. Bed with a Headboard but no footboard & without storage.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

Bed with storage underneath; sometimes also called 'Captain's Bed'.
4. Modern, Minimalist Platform Bed.

Metal Beds:

1. Four Poster Metal Beds.
2. Metal Bed with a High Headboard & High Footboard.
3. Normal Modern Bed with or without Headboard but without Footboard.

With a 12"or 16" metal frame Under a Single Mattress

With approx. 4" metal frame Under Two 8" thick Mattresses, the lower one containing the springs. Both Basic Types of Beds have similar overall construction. Almost all Beds are variations of these Types with some Extras added as Finishes.

Other than the bed with 2 mattresses (bottom one having the springs) on 4" Metal Frame, all others have a Single mattress over a Base/ Frame. The Mattress gets its share of rough treatment during its Lifetime! You can prolong its Life by treating it Right & with Care!

After getting slept on for Days & Months the mattress gets pressed at the same spots daily & loses its shape after only a few months.

Tip: To prevent the mattress from going out of shape you should Rotate & / or Flip the mattress every 3 to 6 Months. [You could write the names of 3different Months on each corner of the mattress.(Jan, Feb, Mar on one-Apr, May, Jun on the other, etc.) On those particular months that corner should be on top left, for example.]

We Protect our furniture by giving it a coat of Varnish / Polish in different forms. Similarly you should Protect your mattress top with a Mattress Protector.

A Mattress Protector is a removable bedding item that lies on top of or acts as a mattress cover to provide protection to the mattress. Some mattress protectors also provide protection to the individual sleeping on the mattress from allergens like Bed bugs, dust mites as well as dead skin (dandruff).

A very lightly Quilted Fitted Sheet is the simplest form of a mattress protector. Fitted bed sheet normally has its four corners fitted with elastic & is used as bottom sheet over the mattress. The purpose of a fitted bottom sheet is to keep it from slipping off the mattress while the bed is in use. Fitted Sheet though is not waterproof & cannot protect the mattress from Liquid spills / urine stains, etc. For that Waterproof mattress protectors are used.

They can be like ones used for Baby beds with felt top & Rubberized back or made in totally waterproof material & fit the mattress like a shower cap. Another type of mattress protector is the 'Flat Sheet or the 'Bed Sheet' as we know it normally. This is a piece of sheet of high quality (high thread count) cloth usually white, which is larger in size than the mattress, so that it can be tucked around & under the mattress.

Many a times both these sheets-Fitted sheet & Flat sheet -are used together (specially in hotels), Flat sheet on top of Fitted sheet for better mattress protection & comfort.

On top of Flat sheet comes Bedspread.

Bedspread is a bed cover with sides that go to the floor.

A Bedspread can be a Printed / Woven sheet of fabric or can be a bed cover Quilted with cotton / polyester batting (wadding). Cotton, Silk, Chenille, Polyester, satin, Denim, Jute, Linen, etc. all these kind of fabrics are used to make Bedspreads; either as single sheets or quilted bed covers. Bedspreads can be of many styles, such as with Bed skirt / without Bed skirt / with Reverse pleat at corners / fitted with Piping on edges, etc. There are Two simple & Basic ways that Bedspreads can be arranged on top of the mattress.

1.First is Where a Bedspread is spread over the Flat sheet & the sleeping pillows, Euro shams, throw cushions, neck-roll, boudoir cushions, etc. either all of these together or only a few of these cushion accessories are arranged on top towards the Headboard side.

2.Second type is where the Sleeping Pillows are the First ones to go over the Flat sheet / Bed sheet, over which a longer Bedspread is put in such a way that the Bedspread gets partially tucked under the Sleeping pillows before continuing down the bed towards the foot of the bed.

These Sleeping Pillows can be one per person or two per person (two tiered) depending on individual choice or comfort.

In case of two tiered pillows the Bedspread is partially tucked under each tier for neater look.

In some cases the Bedspread set comes with a Bed Skirt or Bed Ruffle, which is a decorative piece, used to cover the box spring and legs of the bed. It fits between the mattress and box spring and hangs to the floor.

A bed with a Bed skirt & a beautifully quilted Bedspread & matching cushion accessories looks extremely elegant.

In these days of Minimalism / post Minimalism people prefer Less Cluttered Look!

Even the beds are less fussy, with straight lines, no carvings or ornamentation but with a combination of different Textures. Platform Beds, which are low lying (usually bigger than the mattress from 3 sides), & cantilevered with Japanese 'Zen' style influence are in vogue!

In keeping with the Minimalist Style the Bedspreads are usually tucked around the mattress showing the 'platform' of the bed. Bedspreads & Pillows are also normally white or monochromatic without any prominent design on it. Even the quilting on the Bedspreads is simple like straight lines.

Now, with so much simplicity & less or no color does the bed look like a Plain Jane? No, because normally in this condition a Bed Runner set comes into action!

A Bed Runner set usually consists of a pair of Boudoir Pillows (Small rectangular decorative throw pillows also known as Breakfast Pillows)in a contrasting color but complimenting the theme & Bed Runner -a strip of the same Beautifully & heavily worked / woven fabric about 18"to 24" wide including a matching fabric border band & about 24" to 30" longer than the width of the mattress; so that it hangs about 12" to 15" on either side of the bed.

As the Bed Runner is kept hanging on two sides of the bed, it should have an excellent Fall to be effective! A Bed Runner is either quilted or kept plain with a matching backing fabric depending upon the fall of its fabric. A Bed Runner is the modern equivalent of the heavily quilted Bedspreads of the highly indulgent times!

The Perfect Bed!

Since Designing in general & Interior Designing specifically is a subjective field-by no means this can be the only way to make a bed! This is normally how the bed is made in the Hospitality Industry (Hotels) & since Appearance, Presentation & Comfort are the main criteria there, I thought this was the Right Example to follow for making The Perfect Bed!

How to Hand Train a Parakeet

Who ever said training a parakeet was hard is lying. Period.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

I thought it would be sweet of me to buy my fiancé a parakeet for valentines day. She always talked of having one, and we could use a little noise around the house. What I mean by noise is the sweet chirping and singing of a new Budgie. This would have been the hardest animal we owned so far to train, or so we thought. We already have a cat, and cats come pre programmed to be a domestic, friendly, loving pet, that needs little or no training. Then we have two fish tanks, It was pretty tough teaching our guppies to roll over, or fetch, so we just let them swim around at their own free will. So it's time for a step up, and take on a bigger challenge. This is when we got our bird, or should I say her bird.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

Let me introduce you to Marty.

First off, let me start by telling you we bought our budgie at Petsm**t. Now we all know buying from a big box store like that only makes it harder to train. When you use these stores, the birds are handled like freight, like another item to stock on the shelf. Then they stuff the birds in a small cage with about a hundred more birds. So naturally they start to bond with each other, they interact, and react with each other (one bird flies they all fly). Then you finally pick the one you want, and the birds first real encounter with a human is usually some punk high school kid who just reaches in and grabs him. Pulls him away from his friends and family to stuff him in a small dark box with little holes. No that's not scary at all, that's not going to have an effect on the birds opinion of people, he'll be fine, no problem right.......Wrong! This must have been pretty scary if not traumatizing. Next time I'll use a local breeder and get one for a little more money but already hand tame.

So you did the same thing I did. I felt sorry, what am I supposed to do? Little guy, stuck in a strange place, he can't leave. I'll save you birdie, we'll take you home and let you be free, kinda. First thing you notice is how gitty he is. He wants nothing to do with you, and would go to great extremes to not be touched by you, check out this video and you'll see what I mean.

Does your parakeet do this? We can help.

Rules of buying a bird:
A) Buy as young as possible
B) Buy a cage big enough for him flap his wings and stretch.
C) Have plenty of food on hand, never run out.
D) Provide a safe environment for him.
E) Buy a cuttle bone and a mirror.
F) They like to rip things apart. I use manila rope.
G) Ensure you have time to dedicate
H) Get him some treats too, they love millet.

Now you have a bird at home and he's afraid of everything and anything. We can get started.

(Week 1)
1. Firstly, leave him alone. Put the cage in a corner preferably, this way he doesn't have to watch 4 sides at all times, this will help him relax. He can sit in one position and see everything that's going on. If you don't have a corner put him in, put him up high. If nothing else, put a towel over his cage draping two sides. This will really help him be less jittery. It's nice if he can have some sun, but not full blown sun he can't hide from. Make sure to cover him at night and uncover him each day (this is a good chance to do some talking). Talk to him regularly, as you pass the cage, from across the room, and don't go in the cage, except to change the water and food. And for god's sake do this everyday. He will build a small amount of trust, he'll start to know you won't hurt him. I would leave him alone at least two weeks. Just talking to him as much as possible. Let him hear your voice and get accustomed to it. He will watch your every move and learn your daily routines. This makes a more stable home for him at first that he understands better.

(week 2-3)
2. When he's finally eating regular and chirping around, he is getting comfortable. This is a good thing. He knows you feed him and take care of him. He sees the same people everyday and starts to believe this is his "flock". Now the fun part, You're going to need a lot of patience. He is still not finger trained and this part takes time and patience. Bring the cage in a room that has little or no hiding places, (he will find them and you will be moving furniture to get him out, I promise). Once he's in the room and you got it birdie proof, turn off the lights. I mean a dark room, no lights at all. Go in his cage and put your finger under his chest closer to the leg side and lift up gently. Talk to him as you do this, so he knows it's you. Always use a soft voice and don't let him see you mad or frustrated. This will only scare him more. When he steps up just find a resting place for your hand and leave it there. He has no idea where he is sitting, and you'll show him soon enough. Do this every other night for a week, and try to do it at the same time, so he knows it's coming. Once he steps up on his own you can start the next step.

(week 4)
3. Now he's stepping up on your finger without even trying you say? Now the fun part. Grab a flash light, turn it on but standing on the floor (blocking the light). Once he's up on your finger, slowly pick up the flash light to lighten the room gradually. He still don't know it's you holding him, but he'll realize that as soon as his eyes adjust. Once he sees it, he'll probably jump off and panic. Don't worry put the light down (to darken again) give him time to adjust and start over. Work him like this daily or every other day. And soon you'll see he's sitting on your finger out of habit. It's becomes something he does all the time, but, at this point, in his cage (safe place) during the day he wouldn't consider going near you, this is all normal and will change as time passes. If you want to try to turn on the light in the room like i did, try. He might take well to it. Don't be let down if he's not completly trusting yet. If he spazzed out turn off the light and do it again. The trick is letting his eyes adjust to the dark.

Tricking him on our finger.

The lights were off for about 3 minutes or so.

(week 5-6)
4. So now he sits on your finger in his cage from the dark and he's not that jumpy, WOW! Now it's time to take him out of the cage. Still training in the almost dark, if you have any other pets this is the time to introduce them face to face, with no bars in between. Our cat is a good boy for the most part, he just want to smell him. We introduce them and talk to both the cat and the bird.

We remind the cat to be a "Good boy" and we pet him as he's checking out the bird. This way he associated the bird as family and wouldn't think to hurt him. Once he's had his fill, he'll walk away and get bored with the whole bird thing. Now have someone turn on a light in the other room. It'll be brighter than the flashlight, and it's like a shock to his eyes, and give you time to work with him. Always talking to him make step up over and over on your finger so he don't get distracted. His eyes will adjust and chances are he'll fly towards the light. Walk over there and pick him up with your finger, don't grab him roughly and break all the work you already did. He'll soon realize you're coming to his rescue. Do this as much as possible and be gentle with him. This is a scary thing for him and your his protector.

(week 7)
5. Once we got him used to being on our finger it was time to start doing it during the day. It feels like lost progress, but he has to put it together on his own and will soon be jumping up on your finger whistling Dixie. You'll be chasing him around his cage again, but it will all work out. Once you get him up on our finger, don't push it, let him see what's happening and adjust. Keep talking and drill the sound of your voice into his little brain. At one point you'll be able to take him out. Chances are if he sees his cage, he will take off for it. So I got a little trick for this, see video below.

Getting him out. takes a little practice.

You get him up and turn around quickly so he can't see his cage

Once he's out, take him to where he can't see the cage and won't be tempted. He will always try to go to the cage at first but with clipped wings he'll rarely make it, and you'll have to "Rescue him" and bring him up so he can reach. This develops a bond because you bring him back home every time. Using the same trick to get him away from the cage, do to get him back. So he don't fly from your finger but, step from your finger to his house.

(week 8)
6. You'll soon see, he finds it more interesting to hang out with you, rather than be alone in the cage. What I did was make it more accessible for him. I put some rope in places where I do things, like my computer for example. There's a rope going from a shelf to my computer monitor. He just sits there and watches me type. He finds that rather enjoyable and doesn't fly away. He also like watching us do dishes, he whistles with the sound of the water.

He also likes to sit on top of our laptop while the wife does her internet thing. There are certain places he he likes more than others. I found any of the curtain rods in the hose he likes. I think it's because he's so high and he can see the whole room. When he does fly down he'll wander the floor. Remember let the other animals check him out. If he's not in danger let them interact with each other. My cat is funny, he chases him while the bird comes in for a landing. The bird in turn lands and walk towards the cat and the cat don't know what to do so he jumps back. The bird want to check him out this time and the cats scared...lol it's hilarious

(the rest of time)
7. Soon your budgie will be interacting with you, you'll find him talking and squawking as you talk to people. He feels it's his contribution to the flock. And if we stop, he stops, it's so funny. He even tries yelling over us just to be heard, we acknowledge him and he stops. He just wants to talk that's all. They are social creatures that need interaction. Just don't ignore him and don't abuse him. Teach your kids why and how to treat the bird. Remind them that he is little, and he trusts them. They need to make sure he don't get hurt so he lives a long happy life.

Hope this helps I know it sure worked for me and I have video proof of it. Enjoy your bird, and remember he's a part of your family now, treat him like it. Once he's adjusted well you can put his cage anywhere. Try not to put him in direct sunlight he can't escape from. Birds are a shade loving animal.

Workplace Ergonomics - Tips to Achieve A Comfortable Work Environment

I first began to appreciate the importance concerning ergonomics in the workplace when I began to work in an office setting almost 10 years ago. Prior to that, I was aware that in certain scenarios following periods of heavy typing while at a keyboard, my wrists would be sore for some time afterwards. But at that time, I did not fully grasp just what it was that was causing my discomfort. Shortly after beginning work with my current employer, I became familiar with the term known as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that results from the compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel of the wrist. For an illustration showing the location of the median nerve in the wrist, you may go to the website Wikipedia.org and begin a search using the words Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. If this condition goes unchecked, it can lead to discomfort levels in the wrists ranging from mild to moderate and severe. A common symptom experienced is a tingling sensation ranging from the thumb and up through the index finger.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

The wrists are not the only portions of the body that can be subject to pain and discomfort from prolonged usage of a computer while sitting at a desk. The elbows, shoulders, neck and back are also potential areas of concern that can pose serious problems over the course of time if appropriate preventive measures are not put into place. Headaches can also result if you are sitting too close to the monitor or if there is too much reflective glare from existing lighting.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

A few months after beginning work at my new office, I began to experience mild inflammation in my right wrist. I spoke to my supervisor to appraise him of the situation and that is where I learned about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. He also suggested that an ergonomic evaluation be performed at my workstation with the intent of avoiding any other situations that could possibly arise. A subsequent visit to my doctor confirmed that in fact I did have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Some of my coworkers underwent surgery to correct the symptoms they were experiencing from Carpal Tunnel but I was intent on doing everything I could to make sure I did not need the operation as well.

The term ergonomics originates from the Greek ergon, meaning work, and nomos, meaning natural laws. The overall concept of ergonomics takes into account of ensuring that the equipment being used as well as the overall environment that it is being used in is fitted to the needs of the worker with the intention of preventing repetitive motion injuries. If you are not sure what a repetitive motion injury feels like, imagine how your knees would feel after walking up and down a flight of stairs for an extended period of time.

A staff member at my office who had received specialized training in ergonomics came to my desk and took a series of measurements. Things such as my height, the height of my desk, the angle of my legs when sitting, the angle of my elbows while typing, wrist angle, type of keyboard being used as well as angle of my vision in relation to the height of the monitor were noted. From there, various adjustments of the height for my monitor, desk and chair were made and after that I was told that everything should be fine. The recommendation was made for me to ensure that I took a break now and then and rotated my wrists back and forth to minimize any strain resulting from prolonged keyboarding.

After receiving a promotion to supervisor and reporting to my current office, I was selected to receive training for the purpose of learning how to conduct an ergonomic evaluation. It was there that I learned about the necessary adjustments of a person's workstation so that as a result, the staff member would be sitting in what is called a position of neutral posture. A neutral posture position will basically result in your legs being at a right angle when sitting, your forearms and wrists will be straight when typing and the angle of your seat will be at 90 degrees with proper lumbar support being provided. The shoulders should also be straight, not hunched up or slouching. Your level of horizontal vision should be such that you are looking at the top of the actual monitor screen with the angle of your neck being perpendicular to the floor. To view an illustration that outlines proper posture while using a computer at a workstation, click here.

A wide variety of ergonomic equipment is available for use in the workplace. Gel pads can be used to support the wrists when using a keyboard and mouse. Ergonomic chairs allow for various adjustments to be made with the intent of enhancing personnel comfort. A glare protector can be installed to cut down on glare from monitor screens and reduce the possibility of headaches occuring. An electric stapler can be used in place of a manual one. Braces can be worn on the wrists to provide additional support. You may wish to give thought to using a document holder that places your documents directly in front of you so that you don't have to look at them with your neck facing to the side of your monitor. Think about having an ergonomic, contoured keyboard in place if your wrists continue to bother you. It is good to have frequently used items within a 180 degree angle reach so you can get them easily without the need to lean forward and put strain on your back.

If you are one who finds yourself experiencing problems at the workplace as a result of prolonged computer and keyboard usage, bring the matter up with your supervisor. See if it is possible to have an ergonomic evaluation performed for your workstation. Simple adjustments at your desk can make a major difference in your comfort while working.

The content of this article is based upon the personal experiences of the author and is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice. You can also apply suggestions outlined in this article to places at home where a computer is used. But by all means, take a proactive approach to making sure that your desk is ergonomically friendly. Don't let ignorance result in potential long-term discomfort and problems for you.

White Oak Hardwood Flooring

White oak hardwood flooring is elegant, affordable, and highly durable. This type of flooring varies in appearance and colors that include light tan, dark brown heartwood, and natural sapwood. A straight grained hardwood that is manufactured to withstand heavy traffic, white oak flooring will bring stain resistant, long-lasting beauty to your home. White oak hardwood flooring will transform the rooms in your home from dull and colorless, to warm and rich.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

The two categories for hardwood flooring are number one Common Grade, and number two Common Grade. Number one Common Grade hardwoods have more variations in color and appearance than clear or select woods. Number two Common Grade wood highlights the appearance of the wood's natural characteristics such as color, wormholes, and knots.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

Wood plank flooring is a classic design that is widely used in homes, churches, legal offices, and many other structures. Premium quality wood plank flooring can be found in a variety of popular styles in hardwood and softwood grades. Some popular types of woods for plank floors are oak, pine, and hickory.

Floors made from wood plank or white oak hardwood are easy to clean and maintain, a few simple steps will keep them looking beautiful for years to come. Never clean your wood floors with soapy, hot water. This increases the floor's aging process, and the wood will split or crack. Place protector pads made from felt on the legs of furniture to avoid scratches, and use area rugs with grid pattern or mesh padding.

Hardwood or plank flooring is not recommended for bathroom installations. The bathroom's high level of moisture is an unsuitable condition for these types of floors. White oak hardwood flooring in the bathroom requires extensive cleaning and care on a regular basis. As the wood flooring ages it may become discolored, warped, or cracked.

Three Easy Ways to Remove Scratches From Wood Laminate Flooring

Quality laminate flooring looks similar to real wood, stone or tile, and is often more durable and definitely easier to maintain. Of course, you might still end up with the occasional scratch or flaw in your flooring, so it's important to be prepared with a solution. Check out these three easy ways to remove scratches from wood laminate flooring.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

1. Use a Laminate Repair Kit

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

Whether it's a small scratch from a dropped fork or a larger scratch from moving a chair across the room, a laminate repair kit will fix most flaws. These kits are available at hardware stores and from flooring retailers, and they include all the tools you'll need to remove scratches. Laminate repair kits come in different colors, so by choosing the right match kit, you can match your repair to the exact shade of your wood laminate flooring. Pick up a kit at the same time you buy your new flooring, or bring along a sample plank so that you can match colors at the store. It's a simple and extremely affordable way to remove scratches.

2. Try Colored Filling Pencils

Try special filling pencils for removing scratches from your wood laminate flooring. Most people buy these pencils to remove scratches from real wood, but the pencils can also be used on laminate materials. Before you begin filling in the scratch, you should make sure that the area around the problem spot is cleaned and dried. If the color is matched correctly, the pencil will fill in the scratch and make it less visible to visitors.

3. Save Extra Planks for Repairs

In some cases, it might be necessary to replace the section of the flooring that is scratched. Replacing a plank takes longer and can cost more than a colored pencil or repair kit. However, it might be the only way to truly remove extreme scratches or areas that are especially damaged. If you have a significant dent in your flooring, it's going to be easier and more effective to replace the plank than to try to fill it in with a pencil.

If you've saved extra pieces from the initial installation, it's simple to replace a piece of your wood laminate flooring. You'll already have the exact style and color on hand, and you won't have to spend any more money. New sets of laminate flooring can be pricey if you only need one piece, so it might be a good idea to buy a few extra pieces upfront for repair cases. Fortunately, laminate flooring is very easy to install. There's no need to hire a professional for such a simple repair. Instead, you can spend a bit of your own time and quickly have a new-looking floor again.

Prevent Scratches in Advance

Though there are several easy ways to remove scratches from your wood laminate flooring, it's best if you can avoid them in the first place. Laminate flooring is easy to maintain and will last for many years with the proper care. To avoid scratches in advance, use mats in entryways and in areas that are likely to get scratched. You might even want to consider having guests slip cloth coverings over their shoes before entering, particularly if they are wearing shoes with high heels or platforms. Finally, you should be extremely careful any time you move furniture around. Put protectors on the legs of chairs, couches and tables before moving them across the room, and never drag furniture from one end of the room to the other.

When scratches do appear, you should take care of them quickly in order to minimize their impact. A scratch that is left alone for too long can become deeper and longer, which makes it more difficult to eliminate in the end. With proper care and maintenance, your wood laminate flooring will continue to look fresh for years to come.
