Caring For Laminate Floors

Laminate floors have now become a very popular flooring option for American households.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

Laminate floors are typically made of different layers fused together. The various layers are the wear layer, the pattern or the image layer, the processed wood core (mostly made of fiber boards) and a balancing layer. These are fused together using either high pressure or direct pressure. Apart from this, the top-balancing layer very often comes with a moisture barrier. This means that they are usually resistant to wear and tear, water and moisture, and other such apparent damages like scratches. It is primarily for this reason that laminate floors have become quite popular with Americans as of late. It is very easy to take care of a laminate floor and they generally retain their original shape and shine for years to come.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

Installing a laminate floor is easy. Taking care of laminate floors is also quite easy. The main thing to keep in mind is to try and avoid scratches as much as possible. Apart from this, the surface being moisture and water resistant, all one needs to do is simply vacuum the floor or dust mop it regularly to remove the lose dirt and grit stuck to it.

When it comes to preventing scratching of the surface, one can apply glides or cushioned bottom protectors under the legs of chairs and tables to prevent possible scratching when moving furniture. Keeping floor mats and rubbing one?s feet or shoes on it also ensures that dirt is prevented from coming inside the laminate floors.

It is because of the major advantages like joint integrity, fade resistance, stain resistance, wear and tear resistance and water resistance that laminate floors are very popular. They have become the ideal choice for any type of living and lifestyle.

Steps in Maintaining a Laminate or Tile Flooring

Tiles and laminated flooring are becoming a preference these days. These are chosen over similar products because it is economical and gives out the same effect as their counterparts.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

Laminate or tile flooring needs some care and attention for it to last a lifetime. Although cleaning these types of flooring is as easy as pie, there are still some things to consider and to remember before proceeding with cleaning it.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

Here are the things you should do or not do when cleaning laminated or tiled floors.

1. Never wax nor polish the floor. Some waxes have ingredients that could destroy the outer layers of the tile. This layer is its protective layer against dust and moisture. If it is removed, then dirt could creep in and stick.

2. Vacuum will do for normal cleaning. For your everyday cleaning requirements, you would just need to vacuum the laminated floor or tile and that's it. Sweeping should always be done prior to vacuuming.

3. Use a mop with soft cloth. So as not to scratch the surface, always use mops with soft materials attached to it. Also, make sure the mop is not dripping. Always wring it out because excessive water is not necessary.

4. Do not use abrasive cleaners, scrubbing pads, or scouring powder. As stated earlier, laminated floors have protective coverings. Abrasive materials will not help clean the floor, it would ruin it.

5. Use floor protectors or pads under furniture legs, especially chairs. Chairs are always moved from place to place. Always check if the furniture legs and chairs are not causing scratches on the floor.

6. Place doormats at entryways. Doormats would collect dirt and grit stuck in the shoes. It would also absorb moisture off it. Placing one on every door is a good idea so that people coming in won't leave irremovable dirt sticking to the floor.

7. Use only recommended cleaners for your laminated floors and tiles. Each manufacturer will suggest to you a cleaner that works well with their products. It is a smart idea to go with these cleaners than to try others that could be harmful to the floor.

8. Learn how to use flooring touch-up kits. There are repair kits available for tiles and laminated flooring. Better know how to use it so that minor problems can be easily repaired before it become worse.

9. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when replacing a single board. There are times that the damage on your floor cannot be repaired and replacing the whole board is necessary. When doing so, check out what the manufacturer's instructions are. If you are not sure about it, better ask a professional to do the job.

10. Keep your warranty. Laminate floors and tiles have manufacturer's warranties upon installation. These would ensure that your floor is protected from any defects and would perform to the maximum. Always conform to the warranty conditions.

These are few ways you can do to lengthen the lifespan of your laminated floors and tiles. Although these can be easily replaced and is relatively cheaper, it is not wise to just let it be and not take care of it.

Your home will look new and appealing if its floor is clean and well-maintained. Always leave a good impression with your guests. Start with a shiny, beautiful floor!

Are Solid Hardwood Floors Right For Your Home?

Have you ever been somewhere and seen beautiful hardwood floors that someone laid on a concrete slab or in a basement? They were a mess, weren't they? That's because wood soaks in moisture, and both of these situations involved damp places. When the moisture dries up, it leaves horrible gaps between the floor boards which appear in the winter when the wood contracts. The gaps disappear in the warmer summer months, but the moisture problem is still there to cause more damage.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

Now you know that you should never lay solid hardwood floors in damp areas, and you should also realize that you need to allow for a little space so that the floors can expand and contract. You'll find, though, that there's a whole lot more you need to know about hardwood floors. For example, the wood used for most hardwood flooring is either ash, maple, red oak, or white oak.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

There are three different categories of solid hardwood floorings. The different types are:
* Strip flooring which is between 5/16" and ¾" thick. It is available in widths of 1 ½", 2", and 2 ¼".
* Plank flooring is sold in two different thicknesses and can be between 3" and 8" side.
* Parquet floors are made up in patterns using wood slats.

When you talk about a hand-scraped hardwood floor, you're actually talking about a floor that was crafted by hand. The process used to make the flooring leaves it with very distinctive markings. These floors look great as part of a modern world look or if you want the look of old, reclaimed wood. When you buy this type of flooring, read the labels. Even though it's known as hand-scraped, you will also find engineered versions on the market.

Real solid hardwood hand-scraped floors are very expensive. The engineered floors are best-suited for concrete slabs and high humidity. Some companies also manufacture what is known as distressed flooring which is designed to resemble hand-scraped flooring by adding markings to the wood. Distressed floors aren't as expensive and hand-scraped floors, but they do have somewhat of the same rich look the more costly hand-scraped ones have.

Maintaining Solid Hardwood Floors

Each flooring manufacturer will include cleaning instructions with the flooring. Only use the recommended products when cleaning the floor. You can also use a vacuum cleaner to remove dirt, mud, grit, and stones that can mar the finish. This kind of floor needs to be protected by having a doormat at each door. In addition, when you purchase new furniture items, stay away from pieces with sharp metal or wood legs which might scratch or dent your floor.

You can use furniture coasters or some other type of protector under furniture legs to avoid scratching. There are also wide rubber cups that will not stain the floors available for use on heavy items, like pianos. You can't fix a hardwood floor by applying a coat of paste wax, either, because all that will do is damage the floor. If something gets spilled on your floor, use a paper towel or a soft damp cloth to clean and dry it right away. These kinds of floors are kind of touchy to keep looking nice, but you can't beat the way they make your room look.

How Should You Take Care of Your Solid Hardwood Floors?

If you've ever seen a solid hardwood floor that's gotten wet, you probably already know what a disastrous effect water can have on wood floors. Wood by its very nature absorbs water. If you lay hardwoods on a concrete slab or in a basement, the moisture in the air will be enough to do bad things to the floors. Not only is the finish ruined, but as moisture dries, you see gaps between the boards when the floor contracts in winter. Dampness in the summer months may cause floors to buckle or cup.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

Okay, you've already learned two things about hardwood floors. You know they should never be laid in damp places, and they need room to expand and contract. There's a lot more you need to know before you'll be able to make educated decisions about using solid hardwood floors in your own home. For starters, the woods used in most hardwood floors are maple, red oak, ash, or white oak because of their durable qualities.

Furniture Leg Floor Protectors

You'll find that hardwood flooring falls into three distinct groups. Here's what you'll see when you go to the store:

* Strip flooring - This flooring is 5/16" to 3/4" thick and comes in widths of 1 1/2", 2" and 2 1/4".

* Plank flooring - Planks are available in two thicknesses and in varying widths between three and eight inches.

* Parquet floors - Different than the other two types, parquet floors are made of pieces of wood slats which are laid to form patterns.

You'll find that a hand-scraped hardwood floor may or may not have been crafted by hand. The authentic floors are beautiful and extremely rich and unique-looking. They are also very expensive. They are ideal when used in such decors as modern world or in a situation where you'd want to use old, reclaimed wood. If you go to purchase hand-scraped floors, make sure you get what you paid for. The authentic flooring is hand-crafted, but engineered versions have also appeared on the market.

Because solid hardwood hand-scraped floors are so costly, manufacturing companies have come out with their own versions which are known as distressed floors. Although an attempt has been made to make these floors duplicate the unique markings of the originals, they have fallen short in that area. However, if you don't want to pay the price of real hand-scraped floors, distressed floors make an excellent substitute.

Taking Care of Solid Hardwood Floors

To clean your solid hardwood floors you need to only use the cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer. Wood floors can be vacuumed, too, which will remove any dirt, mud, sand, or small stones which may have gotten tracked in. To keep that at a minimum, install good doormats at each door for people to wipe their feet on before coming in. Be careful of the furniture pieces you buy, too, because some furniture has legs that will scratch the floors.

Furniture coasters or other protectors need to be used under furniture legs to keep them from damaging your solid hardwood floor. You will also need wide rubber cups that are made for large, heavy piece of furniture, such as pianos. Never use paste wax on hardwood, because it will cause more damage. And if you spill something onto the floor, wipe it up with a soft cloth immediately. You'll find that solid hardwood floors take a bit of TLC to keep them looking nice, but think how great they'll look in your house.
